SLEDDOG EXCURSION · SESTRIERE

One hour on the snow, 40 minutes when you drive.

15 minutes of briefing, then the sled is yours. You drive your team of Siberian Huskies through the woods, on an already-marked trail, with an instructor always ahead of you. Not a passenger ride: sleddog as a protagonist.

SLEDDOG IN PIEDMONT

Before you get on the sled

Can't wait to live the experience? Read these lines carefully, then book your adventure in Sestriere. Dog sledding isn't just a sleigh ride: it's a real sport! You work and the dogs work with you. That's why it isn't for everyone, and rightly so.

It's for you if…

  • You want to and can drive
  • You're in good health and feel up to being active: pushing when needed and helping your team by walking uphill
  • You're punctual, and usually arrive ten minutes early for appointments
  • You weigh more than 30 kg (but no more than 100) and are at least 1.20 m tall (below that, you ride as a passenger)

It's not for you if…

  • You picture yourself sitting back and watching what the dogs do, like in the movies
  • You're looking for an hour of pure relaxation
  • You can't be on time for departure
  • You expect the dogs to run on command, with no help from you

And there's one thing we want to tell you honestly.

Driving a sled requires the use of hands, arms and legs, good eyesight and the ability to understand the briefing and put into practice what we explain to you. The musher has to: keep the sled balanced, give the commands to the team and, when needed, help push uphill. This calls for physical stamina for about an hour, with moderate effort. Some conditions, such as an ongoing pregnancy, a recent fracture, prostheses or physical or motor limitations, do not allow safe driving. If this applies to you, write to us before booking: sometimes the solution is to ride as a passenger, sometimes it's to skip it. We decide together. No prejudice, no discrimination: our only priorities are safety and well-being, first for our dogs and then for everyone taking part.

HOW IT WORKS

One hour in all: 15 minutes of briefing, 40 driving.

It starts with a briefing covering all the practical and safety basics: how to get on the sled, how to keep your balance, how to give the commands, how to push, what to do in case of a fall. Then the team is yours.

You drive your sled pulled by 3-4 Siberian Huskies through wooded areas and open spaces, with a view of Monte Chaberton and the Monti della Luna. In front of you there's always an instructor opening the trail: it's this, together with our years of experience, that lets you drive right away, safely.

We're in Sestriere, 2,035 metres: the highest municipality in Italy, lit by the sun from dawn to dusk.

THE QUESTIONS THAT HOLD BACK THE BOOKING

The answers, here, where you decide

"What happens if, after the briefing, I don't feel up to taking part?"

If after the briefing you decide not to take part, that's fine: but tell us before a team is assigned to you, because for technical reasons, once we've set off, it's no longer possible to pull out. In this case there's no refund.

"Will I make it?"

It takes moderate physical effort: you're on your feet for about an hour and, uphill, you help the team push. The briefing prepares you and the instructor is always ahead of you.

"It's a real sport and it's hard work, but that's exactly why it's extremely rewarding."

"And if it rains?"

We go out in any weather except rain. If rain is forecast at altitude, we let you know and move the excursion to another date.

"And if I'm late?"

We ask you to be here ten minutes early: tolerance is zero, like at the airport. If you're late, the team has already left and the spot is lost.

"Is it OK for children?"

From age 3 they ride as passengers; driving starts from about age 7, if they meet the weight and height requirements.

"A magical moment with my family."

"Are the dogs well?"

They're athletes cared for all year round, with a vet checking them twelve months a year. They run when they feel like it, and when they stop running they stay with us, in the family.

"The priority is always their physical and mental well-being."
